Bearing in mind he did not get the all clear to race until Wednesday, the performance he put in was just incredible. Tim would like to say a big thanks to Marcel in particular, because despite the arm injury he was still able to put in a 22 min swim.

Scott had a good race, very solid on the swim, being only 90 secs down on the lead group and led the Channel Island contingent out of the swim. He worked hard on the bike in a group of four, but by the time he got out on the run, there was not much left in the tank. This wasn't surprising as Scott had been laid low by a virus over the last couple of weeks, which had impacted upon his final preparations.

Paul's race didnt go as well as he had hoped. Dropped water bottles contributed to cramping at the end of the bike and during run. However, the major factor was a period of lost training due to a hamstring tear before Christmas, which led to Paul only running 10 times since Christmas, which showed in the run leg. Paul had also been laid low by a virus out on the Gold Coast, which meant he missed the Hobart triathlon.

As for me, well it was fantastic honour and privilege to be out here with the guys. They've been a credit to themselves and the Jersey Triathlon Club and have been fantastic ambassadors for both the Island and the sport of triathlon. We've learnt loads of lessons which we will need to apply quickly if we are going to maintain our record in the NatWest Island Games, and we'll be doing a full debrief when we get back.

Finally, let's end by congratulating Guernsey's Sam Herrdige and Ian Le Pelley for two outstanding performances. Sam came out of the water with the elite group, and smashed 3 mins off her personal best. Ian, in effect won the non-elite race, with 18th being the best he could possibly have hoped for.

Rogers fit to race

 Rogers fit to race
Originally uploaded by garyrichardjones.
Tim Rogers has been declared fit to race in Saturday's Commonwealth Games Triathlon. Rogers has been provisionally cleared to race by both the Commonwealth Games medical team and CWG triathlon race referee. Rogers has made a speedy recovery from his injury, and was taken out of his cast on Tuesday. Preparations were being made for Rogers to race in a lightweight cast, however this was deemed not necessary by a leading Australian sports medicine expert. Rogers then met with the race referee, Terry Sheldrake of New Zealand, to discuss what support could be used if necessary.

Gary Jones, Jersey Triathlon Team Manager, said "Everyone is delighted with the outcome. Tim has worked incredibly hard over the last four weeks to remain positive and has been an inspiration to us all. The swim is
relatively sheltered, although each day it becomes slighty rougher as
the day progresses. The bike leg involves some long straight
streteches, although there are a number of technical turns, which
increase its challenge. The run is predominately flat and is along
the St Kilda Esplanade. Australia

The Jersey Triathlon Commonwealth Games Triathlon Team of Paul Clements and Scott Pitcher were due to participate as part of their final preparations for the Commonwealth Games Triathlon, scheduled for March 18. Clements and Pitcher would have been up against their fiercest competion yet, as the field included Hamish Carter. the 2004 Olympic triathlon and a number of other top Commonwealth competitors. Heavy winds and rain, made the course unsafe and the race organisers made the decision to postpone the race in the interests of the safety of the competitors.

Gary Jones, Jersey Triathlon Team Manager, said "It was a disappointment not to compete, however given the weather conditions, the benefits from competing would have been marginal, with a high risk of injury with less than 2 weeks to go our main race objective.

The Jersey Triathon Team's preparations for the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games are supported by The Royal Bank of Scotland International.

For more information contact

jones.gary@gmail.com

Tim and Gary's awfully big adventure

Tim and Gary's awfully big adventures
Originally uploaded by garyrichardjones.
Well we are finally on the road, or rather we are hanging round the departure lounge at Gatwick North. We've got three pretty long flights ahead, but hey whose complaining. The weather in Southport, Queensland is pretty grim at the moment, so hopefully it will brighten up before we get there. Anyway, 6hrs gone, another 24 hrs to go.

Gary

Triathletes prepare for Melbourne

<img style="float:right; Pitcher said "This was my first race
of the season and was extremely similar in the way it turned out to my
first race last year at Zundert - and I went to have a great season! Rogers who will be competing in his first Commonwealth Games was on a training run, when he was involved in an incident with a dog. Rogers continued with his run, and it was only when he got home realised that something wrong. Further investigation showed that Rogers has a fracture above the wrist and bruising to the elbow which will take approximately 4 - 6 weeks to heal. Rogers who is a quick healer, had a similar problem in 2001 when competing in the World Duathlon Championship, then made a rapid recovery and raced successfully.

Rogers said 'I am disappointed with a set-back at this time, but I've done the mileage, and have been achieving the speed. With the right physio, and by training on my turbo as well as running I should be able to minimize the impact.'
Commonwealth Games Triathlon Team Manager, Gary Jones, said 'Tim is a highly committed and determined triathlete who has overcome setbacks in the past. We will be reviewing the implications of the injury with Jersey's Commonwealth Games Association Officers and Medical Team in the next few days.'

In another incident at the weekend, Scott Pitcher was involved in an cycling accident in Australia whilst racing and has had 18 stitches inserted into cuts. Pitcher is expected to make a full recovery in a week, and will be racing this weekend in Hobart, Tasmania. The Jersey Triathlon Team's preparations for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games are being supported by The Royal Bank of Scotland International.

If you would like any more information contact

Gary Jones tel 608576 (w) or 728323 (w)

Email jones.gary@gmail.com

Melbourne hopes and dreams

We are now only 52 days away from the opening ceremony of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, and this seems as good as time as any to start articulating our hopes and aspiration for the Games themselves.

For the individual triathletes my hopes are that they all get there in good shape, with no major injuries and are able on race day to give of their best, with no mishaps which prevent them from giving of their best.

Personally, first and foremost, I hope all the logistics work, re travel, accommodation and training facilties. I also hope we have an enjoyable trip where we make the most of the experience, in making new friends both in and outside of the sport of triathlon. Furthermore, I hope we get to see soem great sporting action, with great performances and maybe the odd world record.

More than anything, I hope we come away from Melbourne with some great stories to tell friends and family, and that as a team we still get on well enough to want to re-tell those stories to ourselves in years to come.

Countdown to the Games

As part run-up to race day there are a number of key dates to remember

16 January - Scott Pitcher departs for Brisbane
6 February - Team Managers meeting
19 February - Hobart International Triathlon
23 February - Reception Government House
1 March - Gary and Tim depart for Brisbane
3 March - Gary and Tim arrive Southport, Gold Coast
5 March - Luke Harrop Memorial Race
7 March - 12.20 pm depart Gold Coast for Melbourne
14 March - 9 -10 am Federation Technical and Team Managers Briefing
15 March - Opening Ceremony
16 March - 9 -10 am Athlete Briefing
16 March - 10 am - 2pm Course familiarisation
17 March - 1 - 3 pm - Bike,helmet and uniform inspection Catani Gardens, St Kilda
18 March - 1pm SHOWTIME

Making the most of on-line resources

As part of our preparations we are trying to make the most of the resources currently available on the internet. One of the most valuable source of information has been flickr which allows you to access photos of Melboure and in particular St Kilda. In addition, flickr also has a number of groups, where you can find out things about Melbourne, indeed both the Melbourne and Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games provide lots of handy household hints about Melbourne, plus providing the oppportunity to make some useful contacts.

So if you want to see what Melbourne and St Kilda looks like have a look at flickr where not only can you see photos - but you'll come across a place where you can upload your own photos - so friends and family can see what were are all about in Melbourne

Congratulations to Bermudan Triathletes

Jersey Triathlon extends its congratulations to Bermudan triathletes Jamie Brown and Evan Naude who have both qualified for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. So sessions which incorporate 10 seconds max effort followed by 50 seconds recovery - say 4 x 5 sets will be really useful for the bike course

Acclimatisation

In order to get used to the climate, from 5 weeks out, 4 - 5 training sessions per week are required in a 'hot room' at a temperature of around 30C. You need to measure your weight before the session, and drink 1.5 litres of drink for every 1kg of weight lost. Ideally, you would have sodium/carbohydrate in the drink

Easting for recovery

In order to aid recovery after training sessions you need to consume between 50 - 150g of carbohydrate within 2 hrs of completing the session. Example foods would be 200g of pasta, 80g of raisins, 700ml of a sports drink. 100g of bread. Good examples would be a ham, tuna, cheese or chicken sandwiches

Maintaining your immune system

There is some evidence to suggest that consuming carbohydrate during exercise helps maintain the immune system during periods of heavy training

Tapering

Advice from Professor Greg Whyte Director of Science and Research at the English Institute of Sport gave some interesting insights on the 'art of tapering'. Tapering should start from 2 weeks out, maintaining both intensity and frequency, with a reduction in duration. The recommendation is for a gradual reduction in volumes day by day, rather than a sharp drop in volume in the first week. The sessions covered topics which included: physiological markers of training recovery; the psychological profile of elite performers; and how to nurture elite performers.

Jones, Team Manager for the Jersey Triathlon Team at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games said ' The Jersey Triathlon Club is determined to do all that it can to help Jersey triathletes reach their full potential, and attending the annual coaching conference has been a vital part of that process. We have been able to get some excellent information about acclimatisation, which will be useful not just for Melbourne, but the NatWest Island Games in Rhodes in 2007'

The Jersey Triathlon Club would like to thank the Sport Advisory Council for their financial support to help minimise the costs of attending the conference.

If you would like more information please contact Gary Jones,
President of the Jersey Triathlon Club
email jones.gary@gmail.com
tel 728323 (h) or 608576 (w)
or
email Akemp@jec.co.uk tel 499943 (h) 505339 (w)

Clements arrives in Melbourne and reviews course

Paul Clements arrived in Melbourne on Saturday 29 October and sent back this report on the race course

The Swim

In the bay by St Kilda pier. The pier is not sold it is similar to the jetty at Havres des Pas swimming pool so swell and wind can pass right through. Yesterday the sea was rough, there were people kite surfing in the bay and jumping over 3-4 ft swell! So it could be a choppy swim. Today it's like a pond. It's a deep water start so we'll be paraded along the pier before
entering the water. If it's windy this could be cold so we should have some clothing to discard at the start if we are hanging around.

The swim course is self explanatory. The swim exit is via a small beach and slip, then you run over a single lane road and into a park where T1 will be. This is about 400m of running on sand, road, gravel path (which I am told will be carpeted) and grass. It is very similar to imagining running from Bel Royal beach opposite Millbrook Park, across Victoria avenue and through
Millbrook Park, then exiting out onto the inner road.

The Bike

Bike starts on a 3 lane carriage and heads West, this road is just like Victoria avenue at home so lots of space but there are raised cats eyes in the middle of each carriageway so care is needed. After about 1K along Beaconsfield Parade you reach the first dead turn, but actually it's really wide and is more like 2x90 degree bends round the centre reservation. The bike then heads back the way you came past transition and follows the coast. It is wide and flat. You then turn left at Elwood which is flat but only single lane going past Luna Park but then you turn left again onto the Esplande and climb a small hill. This is similar to cycling up the slope by the underpass toward Aquasplash from the tunnel but about 4 times longer. This could be tricky as the Esplanade is single lane with tram lines in the middle between the lane coming the other way. There is a low curb that separates the cars from the tram lines and this could take you off if you hit it! The Esplanade curves around a load of hotels and guest houses so you can't see too far ahead.

You then turn right onto Fitzroy Street, crossing tram lines as you do so but these are perpendicular to you so shouldn't cause any problems. Fitzroy Street is flat for approach 500m then it climbs, similar to the first part of St Aubins hill, then if you imagine at the shell house you turn right and climb the next part of the hill that will be similar to turning into Grey Street. Tram lines run in the middle of the street seperating the dual carriageway traffic. You have to cross tram lines again as you turn into Grey Street and as they are travelling up and down Fitzroy Street this could be tricky, especially if wet! Grey Street flattens out at the top and then you turn (dead turn) and fly back down. Turning left back onto Fitzroy Street, but we will need to be careful not to run wide or you'll be in those tram lines! Then straight back down Fitzroy street dual carriageway, which
is going to be fast. At the bottom is a sweeping left turn but again this goes back into single lane and if you drift to far out into the centre of the road you'll hit those tram lines. Then it's along Esplanade which is flat until the end approaching Luna park, small down hill section, the one you came up, and turn right, across more tram lines which run up and down Esplanade so care will be needed. Follow flat straight road, single lane past Luna Park and turn right onto Beaconsfied Parade (similar to turning on the Vic Avenue from First Tower junction, lots of space, and back to Transition - 5 laps so it's going to be tough towards the end and the stronger bikers will pull away up Fitzroy Street and Grey Street.

The road surfaces are fantastic, very smooth but this could mean slippery if it rains. It's also very exposed so if it gets windy, like yesterday the bike and run could be hard. The prevailing wind is Easterly so you'll have it in your face heading toward Elwood and Luna Park and also up Grey Street...nice climbing hill into wind..!

The run
Is flat apart from the slight climb as you run past Luna Park and start along the Esplanade. Fitzroy street is full of cafe's and restaurants with El-Fresco dining so it's going to be a buzz biking and running past there, a bit like going up and down King Street at home.

I hope that helps. I am really excited as it's going to be a great course. I've taken photos of the course but as I don't have my computer with me I'll have to go to a photo shop and get them down loaded, before emailing them to you.

I went to the MCG today, it's been re-built for the games so it's a bit messed up right now but still very impressive. It can hold 140,000 people so the opening and closing ceremonies are going to be awesome! The athletics field had to be lengthened in the middle so spectators won't be speared by flying javelins!

Anyway happy training and speak to you guys soon.

For more information on the race course follow this link

Commiserations to Maltese triathletes

Jersey triathletes offer their commiserations to the Galea brothers.
